That question is the beginning of what landscape designers are calling rewilding. And in the Ozarks, a region already rich with biodiversity, native plant communities, and functioning natural systems, it's less about importing a concept and more about removing the barriers you've built between your property and the landscape that wants to live there.
This isn't about letting things go. It's about making deliberate, thoughtful choices that work with natural processes rather than against them. The result is a yard that requires less from you, gives more to local wildlife, and honestly — once it gets going — looks more beautiful than anything you could plant from a big-box garden center.
What Rewilding Actually Means for a Homeowner
The word "rewilding" carries some ecological weight — it's used in conservation circles to describe large-scale efforts to restore natural processes to degraded landscapes. But at the backyard scale, it means something simpler and more personal: designing your outdoor space to function as genuine habitat rather than just ornamental ground cover.

When your yard connects to your neighbor's naturalized area, which connects to a creek corridor, which connects to a larger woodland block, you've contributed to something genuinely meaningful. Your half-acre becomes part of a larger network.
Wildlife Viewing: Designing for the Experience
Rewilding isn't purely altruistic. One of the most satisfying outcomes of native habitat design is that it turns your backyard into a genuinely dynamic place to spend time. When you plant for habitat, wildlife shows up. And there's a real art to designing your outdoor space so you can actually enjoy watching it happen.
Think about placement. A native shrub border planted along the back of your property is ecologically valuable, but if it's 200 feet from your porch, you'll miss most of the action. Consider planting a smaller native garden — a mix of berry-producing shrubs like native viburnums or serviceberry, paired with seed-head perennials like native sunflowers and grasses — within comfortable viewing distance of a seating area.
Water features draw wildlife reliably and quickly. A simple recirculating bird bath or a small naturalistic pond with native aquatic plants will attract more species than almost any other single addition. Position these features where you can see them from a favorite window or outdoor chair, and watch what starts showing up within a season.
For homeowners with more acreage, consider leaving a brushy edge zone — a transitional strip between mowed lawn and woodland that features native shrubs, brambles, and downed wood. This "edge habitat" is disproportionately productive for wildlife and requires essentially no maintenance once established.
The Low-Maintenance Reality
Here's the honest truth that makes native habitat design so appealing beyond the ecological benefits: it's genuinely less work than conventional landscaping once you get through the establishment phase.
Native plants evolved here. They don't need supplemental irrigation after their first growing season. They don't need fertilizer. They don't need pesticides, because the insects that might eat them are kept in check by the predators those same plants attract. You're not fighting the system — you're running with it.
The main maintenance task in a rewilded Ozark landscape is management of invasive species, particularly in the early years. Wintercreeper, bush honeysuckle, and Japanese honeysuckle are aggressive and persistent in this region. Staying on top of them — especially in the first two or three seasons — is the work that makes everything else easier.
After that, a native habitat garden mostly manages itself. You'll cut back some perennials in late winter. You might do a controlled burn on a meadow section every few years if you have the acreage and permits for it. But the weekly mowing, the monthly fertilizing, the seasonal reseeding — that largely goes away.
Belonging to Something Bigger
There's a phrase landscape ecologists use: "every yard counts." It's easy to dismiss as a feel-good slogan, but in the Ozarks — a region where private land makes up the vast majority of the landscape — it's simply true. The wildlife that lives here doesn't recognize property lines. The monarch butterfly moving through in September doesn't know where your lot ends and the conservation area begins.
When you design your Ozark backyard as habitat, you're making a decision that extends beyond your own enjoyment. You're contributing to the ecological health of a place that's genuinely worth contributing to. And you're getting something back — a yard that's alive, that shifts and surprises you across seasons, that asks less of your weekends and gives more to your mornings with a cup of coffee on the porch.
